Maine Stay Inn ~ An Insider's Guide to Kennebunkport

The 2nd annual wine tasting at the Maine Stay Inn was held on Saturday, February 25, 2006. Wines from Australia were sampled by the guests and the innkeepers, George & Janice.
The get together began with a brief history of winemaking in Australia, which started shortly after the first British settlement in the late 1700's.

The wines that were sampled included a Wolf Blass Gold Label Riesling 2003. Most agreed that this Riesling was the best they ever had. It was much more dry than others yet, it had a wonderful fruity flavor.

From the Riesling we moved onto the Yalumba (Aboriginal for "all the land around") Viognier (pronounced, vee-own-yay) 2004. Not as fruity as the Riesling. Most had a negative first impression of this wine and decided it was inferior to the Riesling. After a little more time trying the Viognier, most changed their opinion and, while most still preferred the Riesling they also enjoyed the Viognier.

Next we moved onto red wine. We sampled the Jackaroo (an Austrailian cowboy) Big Red 2001. This wine is a blend of Cabernet, Shiraz and Merlot. Even those who were not partial to red wine enjoyed this wine.

The last wine sampled was a nice treat. The Deco Port is a blend of a fine Californian Port and a wonderful Australian Port infused with a dark chocolate essence. The aroma of chocolate is wonderful and again, those who were not fans of Port wines even enjoyed this special dessert wine.

Each of the guests that attended this wine tasting had some great stories to offer to the discussion.

The evening was a terrific success and we look forward to our next wine tasting evening.
