Back then we didn't realize that the Hauers would become the next innkeepers of The Maine Stay; however we did recognize immediately that they would make outstanding innkeepers when they found the right property for them.

While the Hauers speak of their good fortune of being the new innkeepers of this gracious and historic property, Janice and I are delighted that the thousands of guests that we have been priviledged to know, will continue to enjoy the exceptional hospitality and service for which The Maine Stay is so well known.

So you see, our celebration is one of new chapters. A new chapter in the lives of the Hauer family, a new chapter for Janice and me and, a new chapter in the rich history of The Maine Stay Inn which has been welcoming guests to Kennebunkport for more than 62 years.

Paint The Port in Kennebunkport, Maine

We saw the finished painting, it was amazing.
Back by popular demand, Paint the Port is one of the best events Kennebunkport has to offer.

Over 60 well-known New England artists will disperse throughout our picturesque community. Each artist will set up his/her easel at the location of their choice and will spend the day capturing the beauty of each scene on canvas.

The public is encouraged to stop and observe the artists at work.

Choose from your favorite paintings and gather that evening, Sunday, June 22nd at The Nonantum, where the paintings will be auctioned off. The $15 admission price not only offers you the opportunity to bid on some wonderful art but, also attend the cocktail party with delicious hors d'oeuvres.

Proceeds of this event benefit both the Kennebunkport Historical Society and The Heartwood College of Art.

In Kennebunkport It's Not March Madness, It's Cookie Madness

This Saturday, March 8th, the streets of Kennebunkport will come alive with guests of The Maine Stay and other Historic Inns anxiously moving from inn to inn sampling each of the inn's Signature Cookies. Cookie Madness is one of our most popular events in Kennebunkport.

The Maine Stay Inn will be offering our Mocha Chip Meringue Bites. This tasty selection will undoubtedly be the favorite (well, at least my favorite). They are delicious but are also very light.

Each inn will also prepare their own special chocolate chip cookie recipe. Guests are invited to taste each and, at the conclusion will be asked to vote for the best chocolate chip cookie.

Beware, other inns may attempt to influence your decision by offering milk or other libations. Don't be fooled, just vote for The Maine Stay's cookies.

Kennebunkport's Maine Stay Inn Publishes a Video Profile

At The Maine Stay Inn, we have just released a video tour of the Inn along with videos taken around Kennebunkport.

The project began last August (as you can tell from the video) and has gone through plenty of review and editing. Now that the writers' strike is over we were able to call it a wrap (just kidding).

Winter Family Fun in Kennebunkport

This Saturday, February 2, is Winter Family Fun Day at Laudholm Farm.

Bring the family and dress warm as there are winter outdoor activities for everyone. Make a birdhouse, cast animal tracks, strap on a pair of snow shoes and walk this beautiful property, bring your cross country skis or, enjoy a wonderful winter scavenger hunt.

Martin Luther King Day in Kennebunkport

Martin Luther King Day is January 15th and this year we celebrate the 79th birthday of this remarkable civil rights leader. April 4th this year also marks the 40th anniversary of Dr. King's assasination. Just one day before his assasination Dr. King delivered one of his most memorable speeches which included the words, "...I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land."

Like so many other holidays, MLK Day has been changed to be celebrated on a Monday creating a three-day weekend. This year we celebrate on Monday, January 21.

In a poll conducted by The Discovery Channel and AOL, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was selected by the American Public as the third Greatest American.

The Christmas Prelude Hat Parade

Christmas Prelude in Kennebunkport, Maine has been successfully ushering in the holiday season for 26 years.

One of the more popular activities is a relatively new addition to the festivities. The Annual Hat Parade was a natural. Prelude faithfuls have been arriving year after year sporting increasingly creative head gear. The desire to show off this creativity and the opportunity to be recognized gave rise to The Hat Parade.

This photo was supplied by one of The Maine Stay Inn's guests. But, the real news is, our guests Barbara B., her daughter and two granddaughters were the 2007 winners of the Kennebunkport Hat Parade. Congratulations to Barbara and her family. If I know them, next year's hats will be even more creative than the award winning Dock Square Christmas Trees that they proudly displayed on their heads.

This weekend begins the finale of the Prelude celebration for 2007 and is filled with caroling, a tour of the Historic Inns of Kennebunkport, craft shows, Christmas shopping, and much more.

Horse-Drawn Wagon and Sleigh Rides in Kennebunkport

Horse-drawn wagon and sleigh rides continue through the winter months here in Kennebunkport.

These wonderful rides are considered by many as a romantic activity as you and your best girl meander through Kennebunkport's Historic District or, ride through the woods imagining what life was like back in a simpler time.

A horse-drawn wagon ride is a fantastic family activity as well. The novelty of the ride, the history shared by Vince, the owner of Rockin' Horse Stables and especially the opportunity to meet the stable of horses will make memories that will span generations.

After your ride, gather around the fireplace in the barn (it's a pretty nice barn) and enjoy a huge mug of Rockin' Horse Stables hot chocolate. The fireplace will warm you on the outside and the hot chocolate and wonderful memories will take care of the rest.

Christmas in Kennebunk

After our first snow of the season today, it seemed appropriate to write about one of Kennebunk's first events of the Christmas season.

This Sunday, November 25th, the annual Christmas in Kennebunk is an event not to be missed.

Downtown merchants will offer shoppers extended hours to provide the opportunity to get a head start on your holiday shopping.

Enjoy lunch at one of the downtown restaurants then, later that evening, make your way down Main Street to Rotary Park.

The 24th annual lighting of the Becker Memorial Tree will feature new lighting courtesy of KLPD. The new LED lights are the latest in an effort by the Town to continue to take care of our environment.

Don't miss this warm holiday tradition.

The trails of East Point Sanctuary

At the Maine Stay Inn, we have a variety of suggested day trips that are designed to meet the needs of our guests. We have trips for those interested in lighthouses, trips for those wanting to experience the bold and rocky coast of Maine, trips for the gourmet, trips for nature lovers and many more.

Our driving directions will include great places to eat and other diversions that are sure to make your day trip memorable.

Janice and I took a trial run of a new trip that she mapped out for our guests. Our trip took us along some of the best coastal spots in Southern Maine, both the rocky shore and along some beautiful beaches.

Even though we had eaten many times at this day trip's "suggested dining spot," the Cape Pier Chowder House, we still had to stop for some Lobster Stew and Seafood Chowder (hey, it's part of the job. We want everything to be perfect for our guests).

A highlight of this day trip is a walk along some of Maine's most amazing rocky coastline at The East Point Audubon Sanctuary which is located near Wood and Stage Islands in Biddeford Pool. For those of you who have enjoyed a walk along the Marginal Way, The East Point
Audubon Sanctuary is a must. While the paths are not paved and groomed like those at the Marginal Way, they certainly take you along scenery that is just as amazing.

All Soul's Walk in Kennebunkport

This very popular event, the All Soul's Walk, is this Saturday afternoon and evening. You will begin this eerie walk at the Brick Store Museum at either 2:00 pm or again at 4:00 pm. Stroll along with period costumed docents to Hope Cemetery. You will visit the graves of several of the more colorful departed area residents. The fascinating and sometimes tragic stories promise to mesmerize, frighten and get you in the spirit of Halloween.

You will return to the museum for light refreshments and to view portraits of many of the departed "characters" whose resting places you just visited.

At just $5 per person, this is great family entertainment.

Henry VIII's ~ A Kennebunkport Restaurant Review

Their sandwiches look better.
Henry VIII's is the new guy in town. Janice and I stopped in for a cold drink during a hot August stroll downtown. We found this delicatessen/restaurant to be spacious and "ultra clean." We decided we would return.

Well, we didn't get to Henry VIII's all summer but, at breakfast this morning, two of our guests, Jeff and Sherry, recommended that we try a hand-carved sandwich from Henry VIII's as soon as possible. They suggested that we didn't know what we were missing.

As it turned out, Jeff and Sherry surprised us and brought us back sandwiches. Janice and I each had half of a "Henry VIII" and half of a "Squire" sandwich. To top it off, Jeff and Sherry included a side order of Homemade Coleslaw.

The Signature Henry VIII sandwich is hand-carved roast beef topped with their homemade horseradish sauce. The sauce is mild and delicious, the roast beef is cooked medium and is very lean. All this is served warm on a toasted herb-buttered bun.

The Squire sandwich is hand-carved turkey served warm with turkey gravy and cranberry sauce, all on one of those great toasted herb-buttered buns. This warm sandwich was fantastic.

Henry VIII's gets two thumbs up from this seasoned professional epicure. "I wouldn't have a Willie or a Sam." (Does anyone know what that means?)

The Brick Store Museum Display Reaches the Big Leagues

Play Ball! The Brick Store Museum has an exhibit on display until December 29th, titled Kennebunk's Big Leaguers: The Baseball Legacies of Colby Jack and Bobby Coombs.

Baseball fans take note, enjoy this fun trip through the lives and the careers of two major league ballplayers that began their notable sports journeys at Kennebunk High School. "Colby Jack" Coombs (1882-1957) and his nephew Bobby Coombs (1908-1991) both remarkable local athletes went on to play in the big leagues.

An outstanding pitcher, Colby Jack's accomplishments include three World Series wins playing for Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics during the 1910 Series.

Bobby Coombs also pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics and later for the New York Giants. In his major league debut, Bobby pitched to the New York Yankees "Murderer's Row" with the likes of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth. The "Babe" hit home run #664 courtesy of Bobby. Even back then we had a good reason to hate the Yankees.

Both major leaguers went on to coach and both have university baseball stadiums named in their honor.

"Trust in Art" Event Coming to Kennebunkport

Another great opportunity to acquire some local art is coming Sunday, October 14th. Artists will disperse throughout Kennebunkport to capture the beauty of the Trust's wetlands, woods, fields, islands, and beaches on canvas and paper.

The results will be auctioned off at Atlantic Hall in Cape Porpoise that same evening beginning at 5:30 pm following a cocktail reception with hors d'oeuvres catered by The Wayfarer Restaurant.

"Trust in Art" will benefit both the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust and Heartwood College of Art.

Teams (drivers and navigators) will be given clues designed to take you to many historical sites throughout the Kennebunks. The challenge is to decipher the clues, slove some problems and drive from destination to destination within the allotted time periods.

The event begins at Leyland English Auto which located at 114 River Road, Arundel. You are welcome to arrive as early as 8:00 am. Those arriving early can enjoy coffee, donuts and bagels, as well as the opportunity to view some terrific vintage autos and make some new friends. Even if you aren't planning to participate in the rally, you are welcome to come see the cars.

Janice and I took "The Foliage Tour" yesterday. Clearly, we were one week early but we wanted to test our directions.

If you are coming to The Maine Stay next weekend, plan to spend your entire Sunday afternoon on a leisurely drive through the hills of western Maine. Our Tour will take you to some of the best viewing sites coupled with great diversions along the way.

For instance, when you arrive in Cornish, you should definately take a quick side trip to Apple Acres. When you get there, you will find fantastic views of the color laden hills for as far as you can see. You will also be able to get some super fresh apples, delicious apple cider (also, hot mulled apple cider), homemade fudge and apple pies but, best of all, (Say it with me) fresh and hot, homemade apple doughnuts. Yummee! We had some yesterday.

Continue "The Tour" and about 45 minutes later you need to "keep your eyes peeled" for a home and barn that is the worldwide headquarters of Naturally Wood. Naturally Wood makes awesome Birdhouses. A Weekend In Kennebunkport

During this year's 4th of July weekend, Kennebunkport rolled out the red carpet for President Bush and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In early August, once again the carpet came out when President Bush welcomed French President, Nicolas Sarkozy to our beautiful community.

This weekend the King was in Kennebunkport. The Monarch butterfly, the King of the insect world, has begun its migration and many have reached their favorite seaside stop along their migratory route.

Each Autumn, thousands of Monarch butterflies typically gather in Southern Canada and start their long journey to places like Michoacan, Mexico. When the Monarchs are in the north they are usually spread out over a large geographic area however, when they migrate south they typically are concentrated into the same area. Trees in this area of Mexico that have been home to the Monarchs for many years are gradually being cut down. The survival of the Monarch may soon be in jeopardy and as a result organizations are beginning to form to protect the fragile Monarchs.

It might seem a little early to talk about fall foliage here in Maine but, foliage season is right around the corner.

Craft Shows In Kennebunkport

Okay, I'm back. And, so are the craft shows that attract so many to the Kennebunkport Green.

Coming this weekend to the Green, The School Around Us Annual Crafts Fair on the Green. This fair is one of the oldest and finest Juried Fairs.

You can expect 90 booths of wonderful and creative crafts. You may not want to think about it (surely I am not the first to say it this year) but, Christmas is coming.

For your comfort and convenience, available at the fair is a continental breakfast as well as a delicious luncheon.

In addition to the wonderful goods for sale and on display, you will be treated to live music.

The Fair is scheduled for Saturday, September 1st from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, with the rain date the next day, Sunday.

River Day in Kennebunkport

Come celebrate River Day, here in Kennebunkport. The activities kick-off at 10:00 am and continue until 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 11th.

There will be more than 20 exhibits celebrating the history of the river and its uses. Bring your kayak or canoe for a guided paddle down the river or, go flyfishing with a Maine Guide.

Don't bother to pack a lunch. Lobster rolls and hotdogs are just some of the choices available to satisfy hungry adults and children.

This event is sponsored by The Kennebunkport Conservation Commission and the Public Health Department.

Paddy Homan Returns to Kennebunkport

Save the date for this fantastic Irish Tenor, Paddy Homan who is returning to The River Tree Center For The Arts on August 4th at 7:00 pm.

Originally from Cork, Ireland, Paddy will entertain us with many of the best ballads from Ireland's rich musical and cultural history.

Joining Paddy for this special event is Don Wessels , a well known local area performer of Scottish and traditional Irish tunes on the guitar and chromatic harmonica. Don is an an instructor at the River Tree Center for the Arts, Chappell School of Music.

Homan is on his 5th tour of New England. Although Paddy is originally from Cork, he now resides in Chicago where he often performs at the Irish American Heritage Center.

"Listening to Paddy sing…the extra element that he adds to each lyric separates mere music from art. The man is an artist," according to our own David Fouts of the Landmark Gallery, Kennebunkport who expressed his observations after last year’s concert here in the Kennebunkport.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children. They are only available at the door on the night of the performance. River Tree Center for the Arts is on Western Avenue in Lower Village, Kennebunk and the doors open at 6:30 pm. Plan to get there early as this will undoubtedly be a very popular concert.

Circus Smirkus is Coming to Kennebunkport

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN...MEN...MEN...MEN...right here in Kennebunkport, under the big top, a one-ring circus extraordinaire.

Circus Smikus will be held at Rocking Horse Stables on August 6th and 7th and is sure to delight children of all ages.

Circus Smirkus began 20 years ago and is made up of talented Smirkus Troupers, ages 10 to 18, their coaches and crew. They tour New England for two months, putting on performances in conjunction with local non-profit or community youth organizations. This year's Kennebunkport performance is being presented by the Kennebunkport Consolidated PTA.

Smirkus Troupers are selected by audition and work hand-in-hand with professional circus artists. Troupers become completely immersed in circus life. They undergo rigorous training and participate in all aspects including setting up and packing up the big top and all related chores (perhaps this will make some think twice about running away with the circus). A Circus Smirkus Trouper can expect to participate in over 70 shows, presented in 14 towns over the 7 week schedule.

So, come one, come all to the Greatest Show in Kennebunkport.

This is not Wood Island Lighthouse
Wood Island Lighthouse was authorized by President Thomas Jefferson and built in 1808.

Wood Island is a 35-acre island off the coast of Biddeford, Maine at the mouth of the Saco River. The lighthouse, which is coming up on its bicentennial anniversary, has been cared for and restored by The Friends of the Wood Island Lighthouse.

Tours of the lighthouse, along with some tidbits of its interesting history, are available now through September 1st.

Call the reservation line at (207) 286-3229 on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Other days can be ~~iffy~~ inconsistent.

The boat leaves from Vine's Landing in Biddeford Pool (weather permitting) and the guided tour takes about 1.5 hours. The Friends of Wood Island Lighthouse ask for a $10.00 per person donation.

Pier 77 ~ A Kennebunkport Restaurant Review

Our Fourth of July evening began with wonderful company at a wonderful restaurant. Janice and I were joined by Pete and Miriam at Pier 77 for our annual pre-fireworks 4th of July dinner.

I have said it before but it is worth repeating, Pier 77 is an excellent restaurant in a fantastic location.

We received a warm greeting from Kate (the owner, along with her husband Pete who was hard at work in the kitchen) when we arrived. Our table was right by the window. Most of the tables are by the windows and, those that aren't have an equally spectacular view anyway.

Pete and Miriam shared a Classic Ceasar Salad to start. It looked delicious and they both confirmed it. For Janice, it was the Spinach Salad, complete with candied pecans and Goat Cheese. It is served with beets but, I didn't mention them as we both hate beets. Sorry, but neither one of us can stand them. Janice loved the salad. The candied pecans are an excellent complement to the Goat Cheese and the vinegarette dressing. For me, I skipped the starter as I was determined to eat light since we were heading out on a boat to see the fireworks.

For the main course, Miriam got the entree with the "wow factor." The Seafood Stew was piled high with clams, mussels, shrimp and fish in a light tomato saffron sauce. She did a good job with it but, Pete was there to take care of making sure there was no waste. Pete, Janice and I all got the special entree. It was Grilled Swordfish that was served over Puerto Rican dirty rice with broccoli rabe. The swordfish was cooked just right, nice and moist. I had never heard of Puerto Rican dirty rice but, it was fantastic. I think it would make a great accompaniment to several of their dishes. The broccoli rabe was very good. I'm not much of a vegetable person but, I ate it all and I liked it.

No dessert tonight, we had to catch the boat and we didn't have time. Next year... we eat earlier. I've had the pleasure of Pier 77's desserts in the past and they shouldn't be missed.

Two reminders, first Pier 77 makes a great spot for a wedding reception. They do a wonderful job. And second, if you are looking for more casual dining (shorts and tee shirt) visit The Ramp Bar and Grille. Tucked under the main restaurant, the Ramp is casual, comfortable, adorned with Pete's sports memorabilia and sits right on the water. Have a "boat drink" and order from the grill menu.

Kennebunkport's Lobster Summit Ends With A Fish Tale

Security was tight before Putin arrived.
After his arrival visitors, weren't even allowed this close to Walker's Point.
As the Lobster Summit ended, Kennebunkport again takes its place in history.

While Presidents Bush and Putin may not have moved very far forward in reaching mutual goals, hopefully they have eased the tensions of the past several months.

Their fishing trip seemed to go all Putin's way. Joined by President Bush (41) and (43), President Putin was the only one to land a fish. Reported to be 30 inches, my estimate based upon photos I saw had the catch closer to 24 inches. But hey, they had two rulers and one former ruler on the boat so perhaps their measurement was more accurate (do you get it?).

A peace rally gathered on the Kennebunkport Green on Sunday morning. There were speakers, music and a whole lot of banners. It was peaceful and after the initial gathering they marched along Ocean Avenue toward the Bush compound. For security reasons, they were stopped short.

The sounds of jets circling the area 24 hours per day and the sounds of helicopters overhead (literally) have subsided. The motorcades and their disruption of traffic have ended (and it was no big deal). Everything is back to normal in Kennebunkport and The Maine Stay Inn is ready for the Fourth of July.

There is excitement in the air, as well as the sounds of military helicopters, Coast Guard vessels and the Air Force jets.

President Bush ("W") arrives tomorrow and President Putin arrives on Sunday.

With President Bush celebrating his 61st birthday next week (July 6th), perhaps President Putin will come bearing gifts. (President Putin, if you are looking for gift ideas...get anything cowboy. He'll love it.)

Summer in Kennebunkport

Wow, today was a long day. In fact, today was the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

If you live at the equator you had 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness. At the North Pole you experienced 24 hours of daylight and at the South Pole you had 24 hours of darkness (am I glad I don't live at the South Pole).

This first day of summer is known in the astronomical world as the summer solstice. The summer solstice is when the tilt of the earth with respect to the sun reaches its northern most position. This point on the earth is known as the Tropic of Cancer. This year that event occurred today, June 21, 2007 at approximately 2:11 pm, eastern daylight savings time.

What's the point of all this? It's summertime in Kennebunkport and it's time you started thinking about a great beach vacation.

Father's Day 2007 was celebrated with perfect weather in Kennebunkport. It was a great day to head out onto the water or, just relax and enjoy a cookout.

Lucky for us, we were able to celebrate the day with our own very special Dad (seen here with a replica of a brick that will be placed in a pemanent tribute to the 2005 World Champion Chicago White Sox).

Our "Major League" Dad's career started in 1942 when, at age 19 he played for the Philadelphia Athletics. In 1949, he retired after playing for the Chicago White Sox.

Kennebunkport Will Be "Putin" On Its Best Face

Kennebunkport may be the new seat of diplomacy. History could be made beginning on July 1, 2007.

President Bush (43) will be hosting Russian President Vladimir Putin in a historic gathering at the Bush Family Compound at Walker's Point in the quaint, New England seaside village of Kennebunkport, Maine.

The relationship between Presidents Bush and Putin has grown increasingly strained. Harsh rhetoric has been exchanged by each side.

Hopefully this gathering will offer an opportunity to mend relations. A trip out on President Bush's (41) fishing boat and a taste of a Kennebunkport lobster and any animosity between Bush and Putin will melt faster than the butter in which they will dip their lobsters.

Kennebunkport is bustling with art this weekend. Artists are displaying their works in several of Kennebunkport finest inns and bed & breakfasts. If you are interested you can purchase tickets from any of the participating inns for $5.00 which entitles you to visit all of the display locations.

At The Maine Stay Inn, we are fortunate to have the works of the award winning artist, Joan Cope Sutter on display. Joan's works are bringing the walls of The Maine Stay Inn to life with wonderful seascapes and local Kennebunkport scenes.

Joan began her art career as a sculptor in 1980. She took a 20 year hiatus from art and became an innkeeper during which time she painted beautiful murals on the walls of her inn. Joan returned to art just 7 years ago but chose painting as her medium. Joan now works with both oils and watercolors.

It has been nearly a year since I last reviewed The Cape Arundel Inn, located across from Walker's Point in Kennebunkport.

In my last review my intent was to share with my readers just how wonderful this unique restaurant truly is.

The Cape Arundel Inn is our special spot for the occasional celebration or, when we want to show off Kennebunkport to special friends.

Last night it was the former, Janice and I celebrated our 24th anniversary. Time flies!

We began the evening the way we always suggest our guests begin their experience at The Cape Arundel Inn. We arrived early so we could enjoy a drink on their incredible front porch. The evening was perfect and so was the weather. We both enjoyed a rum punch and a view that can't be beat.

We were escorted to the best seat in the house (actually, all their seats are excellent). For our First Plate (formerly known as hors d'oeuvres) Janice had the special bisque, Butternut Squash with chunks of Lobster. Janice describes the bisque as fresh and flavorful. It was a great choice. For me, it was the Broiled Maine Crabcakes in a crisp Panko Crust with Spring Vegetable Slaw and Sweet Chili Sesame Remoulade. Now, there are a couple of words in the description of this dish that I don't even understand but, the crabcakes were delicious. So many different and wonderful flavors.

For our ~~Main~~ Maine Course, Janice had a plate of Veal Medallions, Lobster Tail and Shrimp broiled and served on home-made egg noodle pasta with a wonderful tomato garnish. Lucky for me, Janice couldn't eat her entire meal. That's where a good restaurant critic (like me) comes to the rescue. Her meal was excellent.

My entree was the Lazy Lobster. It was simply the best, better than all the rest. It really was unbelievable and there was just the right amount. The vegetables that were included were excellent but they were clearly overshadowed by the outstanding lobster.

And for dessert...yes, this time we had dessert. For Janice it was Gingered Strawberries over a warm buttermilk biscuit topped with whipped cream. A great improvement to Strawberry Shortcake.

I had the Warmed Peaches on Ginger Bread with French Vanilla Gelato and Macadamia Nuts.

And finally, I never under estimate the the importance of a good cup of coffee. In this case it was an outstanding cup of coffee.

An incomparable location, outstanding cuisine and service that is second to none. Is it any wonder that this is our special spot?

In the start of its second year, Pedicabs, can be seen peddling the streets of Kennebunkport. Whether it's a delightful (and very relaxing) historic tour of the community or, a fun way to travel to and from your favorite restaurant, the Pedicabs are just what you are looking for.

During a summer visit to Kennebunkport, Pedicab owners and operators, Debbie and Brian found themselves returning from a wonderful dinner at Grissini with only one option, walking. While their walk to dinner at Grissini seemed like an enjoyable and healthy idea, they would have preferred different options for their "after dark" trip back.

It was this void that Debbie and Brian would seek to fill. Inspired by visits to Charleston, South Carolina, and after many months of planning and working with the town of Kennebunkport, this void was indeed filled last summer in the first year of operation for the Pedicabs.

The Pedicabs will peddle into their second season beginning on June 15 and after last year's very successful debut, all indications point to even better times for Kennebunkport and its Pedicabs. What a great addition to this community.

And one more thing...don't make the mistake of thinking this is just for visitors. As you can see, Janice and I went for our own trip and what a blast. It's fascinating how many things you can see riding along at the speed of a Pedicab.

Kennebunkport Vacation Update ~ The Beaches

Kennebunkport's Arundel Barn Playhouse Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary Season

...and it's going to be a great one.

If you're visiting Kennebunkport this summer, set aside an evening and plan to attend this wonderful summer theatre. You will be delighted that you did and, you will likely become one of the many loyal Arundel Playhouse Theatre goers.

The season begins with I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. This hilarious show has been described as Seinfeld set to music. This show begins on June 12 and runs through June 30.

Next on the playbill is Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. This always popular "blast from the past" starts on July 3 and runs through July 21.

And then...hold on to your pants because the next offering is The Full Monty. This show is for mature audiences only (Kennebunkport may never be the same). The Full Monty runs from July 24 through August 11.

From there it is back to the PG rating with the season finale featuring Leading Ladies. This comedy is about two actors impersonating soon to be heiresses with their eyes fixed on a million dollar inheritance. There is laughter at every turn. Leading Ladies runs from August 14 through September 1.

The Arundel Playhouse's 10th Aniversary Season is going to be a blockbuster.

Paint The Port Comes Back To Kennebunkport, Maine

The 3rd annual Paint The Port art event is coming to Kennebunkport on Sunday, June 24th.

Artists will come to this quaint seaside village to choose a desirable scene (Kennebunkport is loaded with great scenery) and will spend the day painting. Our community will be littered with very talented artists who will choose their medium. They can select oils watercolors, pastels or perhaps photography.

For a fun and memorable day, plan to tour Kennebunkport throughout the day. Travel by auto, by foot or, better yet, by bicycle from artist to artist and experience their subjects from a new perspective. Look for the "Artist At Work" sign. Examine the works-in-progress and learn a new appreciation for the talents of these wonderful artists.

Gather later that day at the Nonantum Resort for an opportunity to preview the finished works. A reception with hors d'oeuvres begins at 5:00 pm followed by the best part of all...at 6:00 pm the live auction of these works begins. These wonderful works will be auctioned and that presents the opportunity for art lovers to acquire a collectible work (or works) of art at a competitive price.

As pictured above, Artist Peter Hoff puts some final touches on his 2006, Paint The Port offering. Peter retreated to his studio to complete his work as the rain began during last year's event. His subject, The Maine Stay Inn, was a great selection and the finished product was absolutely outstanding. You can also enjoy Peter's work at The Wright Gallery, a wonderful gallery on Cape Porpoise Harbor.

Memorial Day in Kennebunkport

Memorial Day in Kennebunkport is a slice of Americana. Its small town parade along with the gathering to honor those that gave their lives for our freedoms make lasting memories.

Often attended by President Bush and his wife Barbara, the events of Memorial Day in Kennebunkport will have you rubbing elbows with some pretty fancy people.

Originally known as Decoration Day, there are no less than two dozen towns that attempt to lay claim to its birthplace. Even though Waterloo, New York was officially proclaimed as the birthplace of Memorial Day by Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, the origins have never been proven.

In 1915, Moina Michael came up with the idea of wearing red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died in service to our country. Inspired by this, on Memorial Day 1922 the VFW became the first veterans' organization to nationally sell poppies.

Buffleheads Restaurant ~ Restaurants Near Kennebunkport

Ocean views from every window, a wonderful selection of great food, remarkably reasonable prices, excellent service, what else

could you ask for?

This evening's meal at Buffleheads Restaurant began with salads all around. It was blue cheese dressing all around except, I had extra blue cheese. An excellent salad with wonderful dressing.

The basket of rolls were nice and fresh with a crispy crust. That's the way I like them.

The entrees arrived and it was Teriyaki Salmon served on a bed of wilted spinach for Sarah. she commented to Karen, the owner, that it was wonderful. It looked wonderful.

Janice, Erik and I all got the same entree, The Baked Stuffed Shrimp has several Gulf shrimp with cajun style crabmeat stuffing and a creamy lemon crab sauce. It was one of the best baked stuffed shrimp meals I have ever had. The lemon crab sauce was fantastic. According to Karen, the baked stuffed shrimp is Ray's (the other owner and Karen's husband) favorite dish.

No dessert tonight, it was late and we're all innkeepers. Don't let that stop you, I've had the Buffleheads' Brownie topped with Vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. It was unbelievable. Buffleheads has won awards for their awesome brownies.

What else could you ask for? Directions, it's not far away but can be tricky to find. From The Maine Stay Inn it will take you about 15-20 minutes and it is a very pleasant drive.

The Wayfarer Restaurant ~ A Kennebunkport Restaurant Review

I first reviewed The Wayfarer Restaurant after our very first meal there last October. After the fantastic meals we enjoyed last fall, we weren't about to wait too long after The Wayfarer opened for the 2007 season.

Janice started with the Lobster Stew. She described the Stew as awesome. It was the Stuffed Mushrooms for Mike. While I didn't see it, I think he licked the plate. For Peggy and me, we both had the salad with blue cheese dressing.
It was an excellent salad and the dressing was great They also had a dressing with Feta Cheese. I will try that next time.

The famous Wayfarer Pot Roast
As usual, Thursday night at The Wayfarer is Pot Roast night. Of the four of us, only Janice opted for the Pot Roast. I can personally report it was fantastic (I get Janice's leftovers).

Peggy and Mike both got Picattas. For Peggy it was a nightly special of Salmon Picatta and for Mike it was the Chicken Picatta. Two more members of the "clean plate club."

I selected one of the specials as well, The Blackened Swordfish. My fish was done just right. It was spicy and crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. I love swordfish and this entree was excellent. The side of spaghetti with meat sauce satisfied my pasta craving (I always have a pasta craving).

A couple of reminders, The Wayfarer Restaurant is BYOB. Fortunately, Peggy remembered to bring the B, actually she brought the W, it was Pinot Grigio. Also, no credit cards so don't be caught short.

The Wayfarer is a great choice for a nice casual and relaxing dinner and it's just two miles from The Maine Stay Inn.

May Day Festival In Kennebunk

May Day in Kennebunk begins with a pancake breakfast at Christ Church. The festivities continue throughout the day and include attractions for everyone in the family.

May Day marks opening day at the Farmers Market which will include the expected produce, baked goods and cheeses but also chickens, goats and much more.

There will be "plant your own flower" opportunities, maypole dancing, strolling magicians, and face painting. These and many more events will make this celebration chock full of fun.

This fun filled day wraps up with the Kennebunk Alumni Association's Chicken BBQ dinner at BBQBob's on Water Street at 5:00 pm.

Just think, all this and only 4 days until Cinco de Mayo.

Varano's Italian Restaurant ~ Restaurants Near Kennebunkport

Located just a short drive from the Maine Stay Inn on Mile Road in Wells, Varano's Italian Restaurant is like an extension of Boston's North End. The food is awesome.

Many of our summer guests ask what we do in the winter in Kennebunkport, one answer...we go to Varano's.

I'm not a wine drinker but, I do know that Varano's has a fantastic wine list as well as a full bar, if you prefer something other than wine.

Dinner for us begins (every time) with a basket of their warmed up Italian bread and a plate of olive oil. I mix in some of their parmesan cheese with the oil. Already I feel obligated to tell you about the one negative comment I have for this otherwise fine restaurant. The problem is, the bread and oil (with the parmesan) is too good. You eat and eat and if your not careful, you'll fill up before the entree arrives. Only once have I made it to dessert (and those of you that have read these posts before know, I love dessert...just one spoon please).

After ordering the salad soon arrives. Hold the onions and the salad is very good with an Italian vinegarette dressing. When the salad arrives ~~we're~~ I'm usually ready for another basket of bread.

For Janice, the entree is most often the Chicken Marsala. This dish is a boneless breast of chicken sautéed with mushrooms and prosciutto in a butter and Marsala wine sauce. It comes with a side of Penne pasta which I usually get to eat. How is your meal Janice? No need to ask, she gets it just about every time.

For me, the entree is most often the Veal Bracciolettine (aka Veal Brac). This fantastic meal is veal rolled with prosciutto, spinach, and mozzarella cheese, sautéed with mushrooms in a butter and Marsala wine sauce. The same dish is made with chicken. I've had both and they are both really good. This meal also comes with a side of Penne pasta, I eat mine too.

I have also tried the Chicken and the Veal Parmesan. I have had each multiple times. They are both great.

For dessert...only once, not because it wasn't awesome but, because of all that darn bread. But that one time we did have dessert, we both had the cannoli. It really is just like being in the North End. They don't fill the pastry in advance like so many places. They fill them fresh just for you and therefore, the pastry is nice and crisp. The filling is wonderful. I really need to stop eating so much bread.

The service is great (hey, I told you they keep bringing me bread) and the prices are very good as well.

Earth Day In Kennebunkport

Earth Day first began in 1970 in an effort to start a movement against environmental abuse.

This year you can plan to celebrate with a program at The Wells Reserve. This year's theme is coastal fish. Several other "green" topics will be explored.

Master gardeners will give hands-on demonstrations on plant care (great timing as we finally appear to be having Spring).

The day will include live music, a family scavenger hunt, crafts, games and much more.

It's A Long Way From Kennebunkport But, The Whalewalk Inn Is Worth The Trip

Janice and I just returned from a brief getaway to The Whalewalk Inn, located in the beautiful community of Eastham, Massachusetts (Cape Cod).

After a long but peaceful trip we arrived at this georgeous inn. We find ourselves wishing that we could take a similar trip to experience the busy summer season. The Whalewalk is a brief walk to the beaches of the "Bay" and a short drive to the pounding surf of the Cape's first "Ocean" beach.

Whether you spend your day at one of the beaches, kayaking in the bay or, a full day of shopping, you can return to this quiet oasis and and enjoy their new Spa.

The Whalewalk spa boasts a selection of cardio equipment, a wonderful sauna, a huge hot tub and a resistance pool. I saved the best for last, make an appointment for a relaxing and rejuvenating massage and your day is nearly complete.

The Steakhouse ~ Restaurants Near Kennebunkport

Now that I have expanded my horizons and begun to review restaurants outside of Kennebunkport, I have lots of culinary experiences ahead (and I love to eat).

The Steakhouse just reopened 2 weeks ago. Can you guess how many times Janice and I have eaten there since it reopened? I'll give you a hint...it's not once, it's not twice.

The Steakhouse is a great restaurant and when they reopen for the season it becomes the talk of the area.

Of course the thing to order when one visits any steakhouse is steak. Janice always gets the Petite Filet. I have had the filet on several ocassions but, I certainly would never order the "Petite" anything. Their filet mignon is awesome.

Back to the beginning, they serve every table a basket of crusty rolls. They are excellent! Next, the salad. The salads are generous and fresh. I can't say I have tried anything but one flavor of dressing, for me it's blue cheese and, make it extra blue cheese please. So far everything is excellent.

Now for the entree. I have tried a variety. You already know about the filet, I have also had their Lobster Scampi, the Chicken Parmesan and lately, I have moved onto the Teriyaki Sirloin Tips. Each and every one of these has been exceptional.

Now let's move on to dessert. Only one choice...for me it's Strawberry Shortcake. Don't look at the dessert menu, just get the Strawberry Shortcake. It's a great finish to a great meal.

Now, onto the bad news...if you go to The Steakhouse on a weekend night or, you go on any night in the summer or fall, you better get their at opening time (4:00 pm in the summer) or, you will wait and wait and wait. No reservations are accepted and you'll be burning up some of your vacation time wondering if they skipped over your name.

You've been warned.

Patriot's Day ~ Celebrate in Kennebunkport

Of course, the reason we celebrate Patriot's Day is in honor of the battles of Lexington and Concord, which began the hostilities of the American Revolution. The battles took place on April 19, 1775 and were celebrated on that date until 1969, when it was changed to help satisfy our hunger for three-day weekends.

The young Patriot pictured here is undoubtedly celebrating a day off from school.

Also worthy of celebration on Patriot's Day is the running of the world famous Boston Marathon. This year will be the 111th running of the event and is expected to draw more than 20,000 participants. Approximately 500,000 spectators can be expected to line the route and cheer the runners along.

That's not all, on this same day since 1960 the Boston Red Sox have played a home game at Fenway which began at 11:00 am. Beginning this year, the first pitch will be thrown at 10:00 am. This change was made to coincide with the change of the start of this year's marathon. The start of the game is intended to coordinate the estimated completion of the 9 innings with the appearance of the marathon runners in Kenmore Square. The (hopefully) happy fans spill into the square to cheer on the marathon runners.

One more reason for celebration...procrastinators rejoice, Tax Day this year is not the usual April 15th. Because of the weekend, followed by Patriot's Day, Tax Day has been extended to April 17th.

The Maine Diner ~ Restaurants Near Kennebunkport

Just up the road from Kennebunkport, on Route 1 in Wells, is one of the most popular eating experiences in Southern Maine. Drive by The Maine Diner on any summer day, at just about any time of the day and, the line at the Maine Diner spills into the parking lot.Those same waiting lines are seen year round, including the winter season, at each meal hour.

My sister, Judy will often drive up to Wells from Southern New Hampshire on a summertime weekend day, arrive in time for a late breakfast at the diner. After a day at the beach, she returns to the diner for an early dinner.

On our latest trip to the diner, Janice ordered what she usually gets, breakfast (The Maine Diner serves wonderful breakfasts all day long). A three egg cheese omelet with homefries. I ate the homefries, they are great.

For me, on this trip it was the "Jim Nantz" meal. What's the Jim Nantz meal? It's the "Dale Arnold" lobster roll with a cup of The Maine Diner's famous seafood chowder. The seafood chowder was overflowing with scallops, clams and shrimp and it was delicious.

The Dale Arnold lobster roll is a toasted hot dog roll with warm lobster stuffed inside and piled high on top. It was the most lobster I have ever had in a lobster roll. A cup of warm butter is served on the side. You can dunk your lobster into the butter or pour it on your roll. Warning...don't pour too much on the roll, it will fall apart. It is a very different lobster roll than any I have ever had but, it certainly was delicious. I opted for the potato salad side dish. They have great potato salad. The other choices are potato chips or cole slaw. I'm not real big on cole slaw and hey, I can get potato chips anywhere.

Janice and I have been to The Maine Diner many times. All the food is good home cookin'. The service is always friendly and the prices are reasonable. Try it, you too may go back for more later that same day.

Kennebunk Coffeehouse ~ Now That's Entertainment

Guests visit Kennebunkport and are delighted by our peaceful and quiet way of life (in the winter that is). They will often remark that Kenneunkport is just a short ride to Portland and only 90 minutes to Boston. In other words, if you want some cultural events, we are not far away.

Well hold on, the Kennebunk Coffeehouse is right here and they host some wonderful talent. Kennebunk Coffeehouse bills itself as "the premier venue for acoustic music in Southern Maine." If you have any doubts about this claim, visit their listing of coming events, your doubts will disappear.

On Saturday evening, April 14, Kennebunk Coffee House will host a fantastic talent, John Gorka. An acoustic based singer and songwriter, John describes himself as an "aspiring folksinger." Modesty is clearly one of John's attributes as you will understand if you visit his website and play some of the songs he has graciously allowed us to preview.

Those of you who know me understand that, like most people, I have my likes and dislikes. The difference with me is that I usually really like things or, I very much dislike them. I don't have much middle ground. This is certainly true with music and I can tell you that John Gorka's music falls into the "I really like it" category. According to The Boston Globe, John is "the quintessential urban folksinger."

Visit his website, sample his music. John's music truly is "coffeehouse" music.

Innkeeping 105 ~ How Much Should You Pay For Your Inn?

You might think I skipped right over the session on selecting a location and the session on selecting the right inn.

Wrong! The elements that go into determining how much to pay are many and varied and your selection of a location or a specific inn will determine the relative importance of each of these elements. I believe you should be armed with a knowledge of these elements before venturing out to select a location or a specific property.

Some of these elements that factor into the right price include, but are not limited to the following:

Revenue
Expenses
Cash Flow
Condition of the Property
Location
Property value in an alternative use
Interest Rates
Supply vs. Demand

All of these elements can be summed up in one term, "Total Return."

Total return determines why a property in Bismarck, North Dakota may sell for 3 times annual revenue, while a very similar property on the coast of Southern California may sell for 10 times annual revenue.

Using this same example, with the cost of living lower in ND, that same property's total operating expenses may run 40-45% of revenue. This would leave cash flow at 55-60% of revenues. Doing the math, this property is selling at a multiple of approximately 5 times cash flow.

With a much higher cost of living in Southern California this property has a higher operating expense percentage at 60%. Again, I'll do the math...it turns out this property is selling at a multiple of 25 times cash flow.

It would appear that the Bismarck property is far more attractive. At 5 times cash flow the ND property will pay for itself in just 5 years, while the Southern California property would take a full 25 years to earn back the price of the property.

Simple, isn't it? I'm sorry to disappoint you but, it is nowhere near that simple.

The above analysis only deals with the elements of revenue, expenses and the resulting cash flow. We didn't even adjust the cash flow for expected room rate increases or expense increases. If rates in ND are projected to increase by no more than 1% per year for the forseeable future, and the CA property can expect increases ranging between 8-10% per year, then the picture changes dramatically.

Factor into those adjusted revenues the expected changes in expenses for each market then you will be able to calculate the Projected Annual Operating Cash Flow.

Now what are you going to do with all that cash flow you have projected? You better pay back the money you borrowed from the bank and maybe, more to the point, you will have to pay them interest as well.

So your $100,000 in projected annual operating cash flow is going to be used to pay the 4% interest and a portion of the principal on your loan. If that principal and interest totals $60,000 that would leave you with cash after debt service of $40,000. What if interest rates weren't 4% but rather they are 8%? Now your bank payment just got projected at $100,000. Oops! If all other factors were exactly the same, would you still have been willing to pay the same price for the inn?

Let's step back to comparing our ND inn at 5 times cash flow and our CA inn at 25 times cash flow. Now consider that the ND real estate values can expect to increase/decrease from between -2% to +1% per year for the forseeable future. The CA real estate market is hot and values are expected to continue increasing 8% to 12% per year. This is what real estate agents jokingly refer to as the three most important principals of real estate; location, location, location. Would you be willing to forego some annual cash flow for a dramatically larger pay day in the future? Are you beginning to see the concept of Total Return and its importance?

You should hopefully see why the discussion of which particular inn you select should come after determining how you should value that inn. I haven't even mentioned many of the elements listed above although they all (and others) factor into the equation. If you have other considerations that aren't mentioned here, feel free to post a comment.

Now it's time to mend fences. You folks from North Dakota, don't take offense. I used your great State as an example because it's always on my mind. I've spent lots of time in this beautiful state and have many wonderful memories of visits from Fargo to Medora. I've watched the Northern Lights dance across your sky and I've climbed on horseback up and down several of the buttes in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (the truth is, the horses did the climbing). It's one of the best places on earth.

Maine Maple Sugar ~ mmm Good!

Today was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon. As we learned, it was a perfect day for the sap to flow and therefore, the Sugar House at Gile's Family Farm was in high gear.

Frank, our guide, told us how the sap rises from the roots of the maple tree in its quest to nourish the buds that are sprouting on the branches. He explained that the tap collects a very small portion of this sap and does no harm to the tree (as long as the proper care is taken).

We entered the Sugar House and were pleasantly greeted with samples of maple butter, maple nuts and chewy maple cookies.

We learned about the modern advantages of reverse osmosis and of oil fired burners.

The gift shop was an opportunity for everyone to purchase some of the "liquid gold" that was probably made just the day before.

Of course, I bought maple candy. You know, those little maple leaf shaped candies, because I really love them and, a moose shaped maple lollipop (for Janice) because I liked the looks of it.

An Inspirational Event Coming To The Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk

A new and exciting show begins at the Brick Store Museum on March 27, and continues through April 28. A Brush with History: Artistic Interpretations of Archival Images will be a truly unique exhibition.

More than 30 local (and very talented) artists have combed through the vast archives of the museum in search of inspiration. The artists will turn these historical images from old photos and postcards into wonderful works of art.

Lovers of art, lovers of history, lovers of Kennebunkport, there will be something for all. For Janice and I, it's a "Hat Trick," we love all three.

Artists include such local notables as Geraldine Aikman, F. Tina Ambrose, Patrick DeSantis and many others.

Janice and I can't wait to see what these artists have created.

Last Chance for Maine's Cross Country Skiing

It appears that this weekend may be it for the 2007 cross country ski season.

Harris Farm still reports 40 km of trails with a 6" to 12" base. Temperatures are supposed to be warm over the next few days. Great weather for skiing but, not so great for extending the season.

So, this is it. Come to Kennebunkport for some fantastic season-end skiing or, just come for some great weather. Either way, the weekend will be a well deserved treat for us all.

The Marginal Way in Ogunquit

Tori and Dean: Inn Love

Everybody is talking about the latest reality show to hit the airwaves and there hasn't been a single episode aired yet. Okay, I exaggerated a little...not everyone is talking, just all the innkeepers.

The show, Tori and Dean: Inn Love, is (supposedly) a reality show about Tori Spelling and husband Dean McDermott purchasing and operating a bed and breakfast. Located in Temecula, California, they renamed an existing inn, The Oak Creek Manor, which will now be known as Chateau La Rue. The name is taken from Tori's dog's name, Mimi La Rue. Lucky she didn't name her dog Scruffy.

Its first show is scheduled for this evening on Oxygen TV, aka Oh!, at 10:30 pm eastern time. Unfortunately, their largest audience (innkeepers) are fast asleep by that time. Why not record it or Tivo it? Well, if other innkeepers are like us, they can only do that if the children are at home as they are the only ones who understand those new fangled gadgets.

So the American viewing public is about to see which is more challenging, being stranded on a deserted island without fire and water like my favorite reality show Survivor, or owning and operating a bed and breakfast.

This show could do great things for our business. Many people still believe that a Bed and Breakfast is nothing more than a person's home that has a spare bedroom. While those situations continue to exist, today's typical Bed and Breakfast is far from that. Hopefully, this show will portray what our industry is all about in "reality."

Maple Sugar Saturday in Kennebunkport

Today I heard a great joke on the Fox News channel. It went like this:

Sean was driving the streets of Boston desperately looking for a parking space. After many attempts he finally said (in an Irish accent), "Lord if you will find me a parking space, I will attend church every week for the rest of my life and I'll give up drinking."
Sure enough, less than a minute later he spots a great parking space.
Sean then continues, "never mind Lord, I found one."

Shipbuilding in Kennebunkport

The history of shipbuilding in Kennebunkport is rich but, that's not what this article is about. Rather than focusing on the economic boom of 1775 to 1870, when Kennebunkport was one of the wealthiest areas on the east coast, the shipbuilding (actually, boatbuilding) I write about today is taking place just down the street from The Maine Stay Inn.

The Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design was first established in 1978 to provide a high quality education in boatbuilding. In 1979, the Design program was added and in 1999, the Marine Systems Technician Program was created.

The Landing School takes its name from the area of town in which it is located. The Kennebunk Landing area was a major shipbuilding area for nearly 100 years. However, by the 1880's, the large shipyards along the Kennebunk River had been dismantled and the only boats built since then have been small boats.

So why am I telling you all this? This coming weekend, our guests will be treated to a personalized tour of the Landing School. You will see the inner workings of this hands-on trade school devoted to teaching a craft that would otherwise be lost.

True boats lovers might also want to attend The Maine Boatbuilders Show which runs from Thursday, March 16th through Sunday, the 18th.

Spring Forward

It's coming early this year and I love it. It starts at 2:00 am, Sunday, March 11.

What am I talking about? This is a trick question! If you answered Daylight Savings Time, you are wrong. The correct answer is Daylight Saving Time. While adding the "s" allows the term to flow from our tongues more smoothly, it is inaccurate. Likewise, the term itself is not accurate as no daylight is actually saved, simply shifted.

Having said that, I don't care because, I love Daylight Saving Time (DST). Just for fun, the following are some facts about Time that you may not have heard before.

The idea of DST was first conceived by Ben Franklin in 1784.

Standard Time was instituted in the U.S. in 1883 by the railroads and then adopted by Congress. Prior to that, the time of day was a local matter. The idea of time zones came into use about a year later but wasn't enacted into law in the U.S. until 1918. Since the establishment of time zones, the zone boundaries have shifted gradually westward. Localities along the eastern border of each zone saw the advantages of extending evening daylight by one hour and therefore opted to move into the more favorable zone, effectively shifting the line to the west.

Prior to the implementation of a uniform DST, passengers on one particular Ohio to West Virginia bus route, had to change their watches seven times in 35 miles if they wished to display the proper local time.

One year the "spring forward" started a riot in Ohio when students of Ohio University lost an hour of partying time. When police arrived, over 1,000 students threw bottles and yelled "Freedom" to protest this terrible miscarriage of justice.

In the Spring, Amtrak trains travelling during the time change instantly become an hour late. Amtrak does their best to make up the time. So what do they do in the fall, when the clocks are changed back (and they are instantly ahead of schedule)? They all come to a halt at 2:00 am and they resume an hour later. No I am not kidding.

Just one more, and this one is audience participation. On the date of changing clocks back in the fall (this year on November 4th) if twins are born, the first born at 1:55 am and the second is born 10 minutes later, at 1:05 am, which one is older?

Federal Jack's ~ A Kennebunkport Restaurant Review

I have been reviewing restaurants in and around Kennebunkport for about a year now. I am at a loss to figure out why, until now, I haven't reviewed Federal Jack's.

The casual atmosphere at Federal Jack's is inviting and, although it is a brew pub, it is suitable for families as well as couples looking for a nice dining experience.

Federal Jack's menu is diverse (again, great for families) from your typical "pub" food, to some very impressive entrees like their Potato Encrusted Haddock or their Lobster Ravioli.

While I have tried and loved their Thai Shrimp, typically I go for the pub fare. Their burgers are awesome and when I'm in the burger mood, I always gravitate toward the Cheddar Bacon Burger (No description necessary as it's all in the name).

A more frequent choice for me is the Reuben. Not every place makes a good Reuben but, at Federal Jack's they are great. It's piled high with lean corned beef (don't even think about trying to slip in pastrami on me) on toasted rye bread. Just the right amount of sauerkraut, swiss cheese and thousand island dressing. I'm getting hungry!

I'm sorry, I jumped ahead, let's go back to the beginning. Their beer is unbelievable. They have some wonderful selections and, of course beer is never better than when it is fresh and it doesn't get any fresher than at Federal Jack's. Here's a tip, get the beer sampler. That way you can get a taste of a full range of their brews.

For starters, their Classic New England Clam Chowder is really great but, someone really should get the Award Winning, Texas Two-Pint Chili. If it were me, I'd get the chili and take a taste of the chowder from Janice. Of course, I would give her a taste of my chili (dessert is the only course I don't share).

Okay, now it's onto the Reuben., go back and re-read if you need to.

And finally, for dessert, don't read the menu, I already know what you want. Once again it's Award Winning. The Chocolate Vanilla Float is extraordinary. Made with Federal Jack's homemade chocolate soda, vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Once you taste it, you will understand why it took first place in the Chocolate Lover's Fling and Auction in Portland, Maine.

When you are in Kennebukport, don't miss Federal Jack's, it is one of The Maine Stay Inn's top picks. It's fun and it has excellent food. And, if there is a ball game on, you won't miss anything, there are flat panel TV's all over the place.

There's Always Things To Do In Kennebunkport

The Wells Reserve at Laudholm Farm is having a wonderful and informative event this Saturday, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Eileen Willard, an experienced naturalist and a teaching assistant at the University of New Hampshire will conduct a winter tree walk. Ms. Willard will guide a group through the winter wonderland of Laudholm Farm showing us how to identify the various species of Southern Maine trees.

It's not as easy as it sounds, remember there are no leaves on them at this time of year.

Reservations are required and we will be happy to help you with that. Also, while the trees have no leaves, they do have snow on them (that's a hint, dress warm or warmly , math was my subject).

If you have never visited Laudholm Farm, this is a great reason to discover this special treasure.

When you complete your nature fix, return to The Maine Stay Inn and it's time to work on your cookie fix (now your talkin'). Tour each of the seven Historic Inns of Kennebunkport and sample each inns' signature cookie. Take home the signature cookie recipes and vote for the inn with the best chocolate chip cookie (a vote for The Maine Stay could mean extra cookies for you).

Kennebunkport's 2nd Annual Nott House Reception Was a Great Time

This evening, guests of The Maine Stay Inn and the other Historic Inns joined their innkeepers for a reception and tour of the Kennebunkport Historical Society's Nott House. Entertainment was provided by our local harpist, Emily who shared her heavenly sounds with the group.

Each innkeeper brought their favorite hors d'oeuvres and a package of recipes was given to each guest. At the conclusion of the evening, each of the inns held a drawing and gave away a gift certificate to one of their lucky guests (congratulations Hank and Carole!).

The Nott House is similar to a time capsule. It gives us a glimpse of life as it existed in the mid-1800's when Kennebunkport's shipbuilding industry thrived and made this quaint seaside town one of the wealthiest in New England. The carpets, furnishings and wallpaper are original to the house. They reflect the four generations of the Perkins and Nott families who occupied the home from the late 1700's through to the mid-1900's.

Coming to Kennebunkport? Bring Your Brownie

There are many wonderful "camera worthy" sites in and around Kennebunkport. Popular subjects include the rocky coastline, our wonderful lighthouses, Walker's Point and, of course, The Wedding Cake House.

The Wedding Cake House is located a short drive from The Maine Stay Inn. It sits directly on Route 35 and as you drive along, it is hard to miss. You'll often see one or two buses pulled over, its occupants spread out on both sides of the street with cameras clicking. You will have to slow for these pedestrians, so why not pull over and take a picture or two for yourself. If you don't bring back a picture no one will believe your description.

Built in 1825, by shipbuilder George Washington Bourne, this brick Federal-style home didn't start receiving its "icing" until 1852. Bourne was inspired by Milan's Gothic Cathedral. Using only hand tools, Bourne completed the decorations shortly before his death in 1856.

The romantic legend of this architectural marvel actually began many years later. A clever Kennebunk businessman published a postcard and named the house The Wedding Cake House. From there the legend began, at first about a recently married sea captain. He was said to have spent many a lonely night at sea, carving the intricate decorations as a way to cope with the long separations from his new bride.

The story got more and more romantic through the years.

The Wedding Cake House is privately owned and unavailable for tours of any kind. The current owners opened it for the first time ever for several months following Hurricane Katrina. They took a small donation from the many thousands that took advantage of the opportunity and donated all proceeds to the Hurricane relief efforts.

What Do You Say in Kennebunkport? Tonight...Say Cheese

It was cheese, cheese and more cheese at The Maine Stay Inn this evening as our guests enjoyed the opportunity to sample a variety of offerings.

From a light tasting D'Affinois, all the way to an aged sharp cheddar, there was something for every taste.

As all epicurean delights should, this evening's event ended with dessert. Dessert for the evening was a tasting of the Maine Stay Inn 2007 Chocolate Tasting winner, the 71% Organic Dark Chocolate from The Grenada Chocolate Company.

What's next? Next Saturday night, guests of the Maine Stay can choose to participate in a special tour of the Kennebunkport Historical Society's, Nott House. You will see what life was like for the Nott family during the bustling Victorian era.

Where to Get the Best Hot Dog in Kennebunkport?

Who would even ask such a question? Is it blasphemy to ask about hot dogs in Kennebunkport? After all, the only thing hot dog rolls should be doing in our quaint village is getting themselves stuffed with lobster.

Well, I'm sorry but I love a good hot dog. So, I have been in a search for the best hot dog in Kennebunkport. I have been searching for 5 years now. I have even expanded my search to include the County of York. After all, we have a very well known hot dog stand down in the city of York and another just north in Saco. I tried them both.

So what are my results...hold on, I have felt the need to further expand my search to the entire State of Maine.

Then I had a tough decision to make. I was in search of the best. In theory if there were 2 or 3 hot dogs to compare you could always choose the best among them. But, if an expert and professional food connoisseur like me (self proclaimed) is to name "The Best Of" shouldn't the winner be at least good? If I am to put my "stamp" on a winner, someone may take that as my recommendation.

I truly am sorry. I haven't found a good hot dog in Maine. At least not yet. I'll keep on looking.

Please send me your suggestions for a great hot dog. It can be anywhere, not just Kennebunkport, not just Maine. I will travel for a great hot dog.

Oh, I should list my personal criteria for a great hot dog:

Grilled or griddled? Yes and yes.
Boiled? Absolutely not.
Grill or griddle the bun? Yes please.
Steam the bun? What is wrong with these people?
Mustard? Oh yes.
Relish? That'll be okay.
Ketchup? Ya for the fries (the kids can put it on the dogs).
Mayonnaise? Stop right there. If that is an option, leave without eating anything.
Chili, sauteed onions, cheese, sauerkraut? Yes x 4.

This year's Arts in the Inns will see some exciting enhancements to its list of events.

The program is now in the advanced planning stages so, save the date. The events will be held from May 30th through June 3rd.

Art Lovers...don't miss this.

New England artists will, once again, be displaying there work at various historic inns all around Kennebunkport and Kennebunk. In addition, a schedule of private gatherings with artists, prominent local chefs and a limited number of interested guests will help propel this year's program to be the first in what will certainly become a growing regional event. These renowned chefs will create offerings inspired by the artists with which they are paired.

The Maine Stay Inn is holding it's 3rd Annual Cheese Tasting next Saturday, February 24th.

Bandaloop ~ A Kennebunkport Restaurant Review

What is a Bandaloop? If I were going to define it I would say, "a Bandaloop is a semi-hidden treasure of a restaurant tucked away in the quaint seaside village of Kennebunkport."

However, the definition on Bandaloop's website identifies it as, "the name of a fictional tribe taken from the Tom Robbins’ novel Jitterbug Perfume. In the book, this tribe knew the secret to eternal life."

My suggestion...definately plan on dinner at Bandaloop and you can decide for yourself which definition is more apropos.

Bandaloop is an intimate and comfortable restaurant with a casual and funky ambiance. The owners, Scott and Bridget Lee are dedicated to serving organic, all natural local Maine products whenever possible.

We were joined for dinner this evening by our friends Jan and Rick. We all started with appetizers and, we all ordered the same thing (hey, what kind of restaurant review is this?)...Bandaloop Egg Rolls. Don't chalk this up to coincidence, these Egg Rolls are outrageous. They are filled with red onions, walnuts, gorgonzola (yum), with a sweet and sour port wine reduction for dipping. I know, a more professional restaurant reviewer would have ordered something different in order to expand the scope of the review...too bad, I've had these Egg Rolls before and I wasn't about to pass them up . You shouldn't either.

Next, the main course, for Jan it was the Pan Seared Fresh Escolar Fillet with fresh crab and basil buerre blanc (I know what crab is but the rest, I'm stumped). Jan reported that her meal was wonderful. It was the Bandaloop Cioppino for Rick, a medley of clams, mussels, shrimp, scallops and medallions of fish, steamed in a zesty tomato-lime broth, with Isreali cous cous and basil. Rick's description was, "fantastic, as usual." Janice had the Skewered Large Shrimp with a Zesty Asian Peanut Sauce. Janice talked about how good it was all the way home. And for me, it was the Portobello Mushroom-Sun Dried Tomato and Vegetable Medley with Cavatappi and Shrimp. This medley included red onion, bell pepper, broccoli and basil finished with sherry, Marcona Almonds and Parmesan. Wow, was it good!

And then dessert. I really like dining with people who enjoy dessert. Janice had Bandaloop's version of Chocolate Decadence. She enjoyed about half of it but was very full from her meal and ended up taking home a Georgie Bag. Yippee! It was really good. Jan, Rick and I all got the Mango-Peach Tart with Vanilla ice cream. The tart was warm and excellent but, if you order it, don't forget to eat the ice cream. It was also excellent. Those of you who know me, know that I am an expert when it comes to Vanilla ice cream.

As dessert was arriving, in walked Rob and Leigh from The Captain Fairfield Inn. Fortunately, they sat right next to us. I really like living in a small town.

Good food , good friends and a warm and comfortable setting, what more could we ask for?
